Kolkata-based UCO Bank is planning to participate in the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) pilot project by September 2023, according to MD & CEO Ashwani Kumar in an exclusive interview with Moneycontrol on August 1. Initially, the bank will join in the retail segment, and later, it may explore opportunities in other segments. The RBI launched the first pilot of the digital rupee on October 31, 2022, in the wholesale segment and had selected nine banks, including SBI, Bank of Baroda, Union Bank of India, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Yes Bank, IDFC First Bank, and HSBC, as participants.
